Stock Market Open
If you ever considered stock market trading as a part time basis have ever thought about how the stock market open is on a fixed schedule. The New York Stock Market opens at 9:30 AM and closes at 4:00 PM That’s a shorter schedule right there than most of us work. The second good part is the stock market closes 10 days a year for holiday’s – I know a few of us out there would actually like to have real holidays off.
Here’s the holiday’s for 2009:
| New Year’s Day | January 1, 2009 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | January 19, 2009 |
| President’s Day | February 16, 2009 |
| Good Friday | April 10, 2009 |
| Memorial Day | May 25, 2009 |
| Independence Day | July 3, 2009 (Observed) |
| Labor Day | September 7, 2009 |
| Thanksgiving Day | November 26, 2009 |
| Day after Thanksgiving | Early close 1:00 p.m. |
| Christmas | December 25, 2009 |
The part I’ve always thought (dreamed) about is if the stock market open isn’t until 9:30 AM eastern time, and I just happened to move to Hawaii than my day would start at 4:30 AM! If you’re not a morning person you certainly could move the other way around the globe to adjust the stock market open to when you want. I love the idea of starting at 4:30 AM, finishing at 11:00 AM and having the rest of the day to enjoy the beach. Of course I need to get past the stock market 101 fundamentals before I’m earning big enough money to pull that life off.
In fact I’m adding this to my dream board now. When do you want the stock market to open?
Other important market opening times:
- NASDAQ – 9:30 AM Eastern
- CBOE (options) – the equities trade 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM Central
- Forex – basically 24 hours between the different currencies

Personally, I would like the market to be always open.
